Location Description
The Casa Natal de Luis Muñoz Rivera was the birthplace of distinguished liberal politician, journalist, orator and writer Luis Muñoz Rivera in 1859. Luis Muñoz Rivera collaborated on such newspapers as El Pueblo, Clamor del País and El Buscapié; he also founded the newspaper La Democracia. In 1897, he negotiated the Charter of Autonomy for Puerto Rico with the Spanish government. A founder of the Partido Liberal and, in 1904, of Partido Unión de Puerto Rico, he was appointed Resident Commissioner to the U.S. Congress in Washington, DC, by the President of the United States, a position he held from 1911 to 1916. His birthplace is a one-story rectangular wooden house with a continuous balustrade in the front; this home characterized the architectural simplicity popular in the period. The house was restored in 1959 and converted into a library-museum by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture.
