San Cristóbal Fort

501 Norzagaray St Old San Juan, PR 00901

The Castillo de San Cristobal is the largest fortification ever built by the Spanish in the New World. Declared a World Heritage site in 1983, this massive fortification which covers 27 acres is the place where the first shots of the Spanish-American War on Puerto Rican soil occurred at this sprawling fort. The intricate castle-like structure, featuring five units connected by moats and tunnels, sprawls over 27 coastal acres. Visitors can explore creepy dungeons, ancient soldier barracks and military-based exhibits throughout the fort's history-rich nooks and crannies.

The Experience
Allow an hour at the very least to properly explore the grounds. Ranger tours are available twice a day, but a detailed map outlines an easy-to-follow and informative self-guided tour. Perhaps the biggest draw, the stunning views from the upper battlements feature Old San Juan's cityscape and the expansive Atlantic. Peer down at the rocky shore from behind a massive cannon, and you can almost imagine the bloodshed that once soaked these storied battlegrounds.
