Summer's over? Not quite!

By Ronald | 8/18/2008, @7:41:42 PM

Ah, august. Its that time of the year again where most families return to their daily routine of taking the kids to school, getting early to work, and so forth. For the regular traveler, the end of july means the end of the "fun" season. However, if you know where to look, you can actually enjoy a peaceful, jet exciting vacation, Puerto Rico style.

Traveling to the Island after the July season can be a very rewarding experience, not to mention time-saving. With school back in gear, most Puerto Ricans are back on their daily routines, so there is plenty of space to enjoy the most interesting spots on the Island. However, you need to know where and how to look. Here are some pointers if you wish to travel to the Island on this time of the year.

1. With summer season over, there are plenty of places you can visit without the regular summer crowds. In fact, some people prefer to travel to the island between mid-august to mid-September for this same reason. So don't hesitate to take your time to plan your vacation. Beaches are nearly empty this time of year, and so are most travel spots. So take the time to browse our guides and find the best destinations you wish to see.

2. Plan ahead. Call your destination and ask them the best time to get there, and what route you should take. Most information desks will gladly walk you through the best way to get to your location quickly avoiding jams and other nuances.

3. Get there early. In Puerto Rico, school starts after mid-august. So normally you can expect a lot less traffic and movement on tourist places during this time. However, this also means traveling a bit earlier too. School time is about 7:30 to 8:30 AM, so you can expect heavy traffic by then, mostly in the metropolitan areas or crowded cities. So if you want to enjoy a good time at the beach, you can either get up real early, or just stay in bed a bit longer and start your trip after 8:30AM. If you are close to your destination, then this is no problem. However, if you plan to go a bit farther away, make sure you start your trip a bit earlier than planned.

4. Avoid schools and government facilities. When traveling the Island by car, its very important that you call your destination and ask them if there are any schools or government facilities in the area. These can get very crowded up until 9:00AM, which means wasting precious vacation time in a traffic jam. So make sure you drive around schools or any other facilities on your way to your destination.

5. Return early -- or late. Same rules of school time apply: public schools normally end the day around 3:00PM, while private colleges end the day around 1:00 to 2:00PM. So make sure you are not on the street at this time. Plan your return trip to around either noon or after 4:00PM. That way you can avoid the school jams.

6. Roads are very nice! With people in their jobs and kids in school, traveling around is a breeze! Of course, make sure you follow the timings above. Other than that, simply take your car around the best roads on the Island, this is one of the best ways to explore Puerto Rico.

7. Don't leave that umbrella! Hurricane season is at its strongest during august and September, so don't feel bad if you see thundering clouds the day of your big trip! Keep notice of our Weather Section or your favorite weather source for what is expected in terms of weather. However, expect some rain in the central and north parts of Puerto Rico. However, to the south and west the climate can be very comfortable, so staying in the southern cities and planning around these parts is very recommended. Click here for a list of locations in the south and western areas.

8. Have fun! There are plenty of things to do in Puerto Rico after "summer". Just sit back, relax, and enjoy tour stay!
