Beach Review: Buyé Beach in Cabo Rojo
By Ron | 4/7/2010, @5:46:55 AM
If something has Puerto Rico is miles and miles of beaches and coastal areas. Some of them are famous for their beauty and facilities, others for their undisturbed peacefulness. But all of them are a great way to enjoy the island of Puerto Rico.
Last week we decided to take a break from the busy sounds of every day life and take the kids for a day at the beach, but since this was spring break week, we realized we didn’t want to go to the busy and crowded beaches like Luquillo Beach or Crashboat Beach. Instead, we took our swimming gear and headed to one of Puerto Rico’s not-so-known beaches: Buyé Beach in Cabo Rojo.
Getting to BuyéBuyé beach is located in the city of Cabo Rojo, in the southwestern tip of the island. There are many ways to get there, however we decided the take the easiest (albeit longest) way around, via Route #2. If you are coming from San Juan, you need to head in the direction of Arecibo / Aguadilla and then Mayaguez. If coming from Ponce, simply follow route #2 towards Mayaguez. Once you get to Mayaguez, locate the Mayaguez Mall Shopping Center (right on road #2), then take the exit towards Cabo Rojo via Road #100 (if coming from Ponce, the exit is before the mall, if from the north, the exit is after the mall, you can’t miss it). Follow road #100 south. Once you start seeing the shopping centers and stores, bear right, and keep watching for the sign that reads “Playa Buyé”, or intersection to road #308. Make a right here towards #308, then a few steps after that you will see a “DO NOT ENTER” sign. Make a left here to follow road #307. Continue on this road paying attention to the signs. After about 8 – 10 minutes you will find the entrance to the beach, make a right and keep ahead.
Parking SpaceThe beach itself cannot be reached from the road. You here have two options: you can park your car on the side of the road. On a busy holiday, cars can line up pretty far up the road and off the beach, so make sure you get there early. There are no fees for leaving the car on the roadside, but make sure you park on a safe location and store away any valuables.
The other option is to use one of the parking spaces from one of the hotels on the area. If you use the parking from the Buyé Beach Resort there is a $3 per-car fee. Again, get there early as the parking lot can get full pretty quick. Also make sure you keep your ticket handy because it allows you to use the nearby bathrooms of the resort.
Beach Area and Water ConditionsBuyé’s beach area is one of the most accessible and comfortable on the island. The space from the surrounding buildings to the beach is small, so anywhere you lay down you’ll be a couple of steps away from the water. There are quite a lot of trees and palm trees with plenty of shade, so if you are relatively early (before 10:00AM except on holidays) then you can count on a good place to lay down your gear.
The water on the beach itself has gotten a bit bad over the years. With this I mean that some years ago Buyé was one of the cleanest in terms of water clarity and algae content. On later years, however, this panorama has changed. You can expect quite a good amount of algae debris along the beach, but there are some good spots that can be found further in where there is not much algae and the water is clean enough.
One of the best things of Buyé is that unlike most beaches in Puerto Rico the water level doesn’t drop much for quite a distance. From where the beach starts to the no-swimming buoy area there can be as far as 75 – 100 feet from the coast, with depths not reaching more than 3 ½ to 4 feet, so for kids and no-swimmers this beach is great.
Beachside AmenitiesMost of Buyé’s amenities are from the surrounding hotels. Since it is not an official government swimming area, it does not have its own bathrooms / showers. Nevertheless, you can get a 20-second shower for $0.50 at Buyé Beach Resort at the parking area. There are no bathrooms, but if you parked your car in the Buyé Beach Resort parking, they will let you use their outside bathroom facilities, provided you show them your parking ticket.
The resort also offers for visitors its own cafeteria, a pretty well stocked-up gift-shop and mini market, and some gazebos for rental (fees start at $25 per day). Prices at the cafeteria were not that bad, so if you forgot to pack something for your beach day, you will be able to find it here.
ConclusionBuyé beach is a great place to spend the day at the beach, with plenty of facilities around the beach area and a whole lot of trees to spare. Also the water depth is great for the kids. Bathrooms and showers lacking, we rate Buyé an 8/10.
